Pick the right season

April-May and September-October offer the best balance: pleasant weather, smaller crowds, better prices. For swimming, aim for June to September (sea between 20 and 26°C).

The mistral wind can catch you off guard

This strong, dry wind blows several days a month, especially in winter and spring, even under a bright blue sky. Pack a windbreaker, even in summer.

Real bouillabaisse takes patience

The city's signature dish: a broth of Mediterranean rock fish (scorpionfish first and foremost) served in two courses, with rouille and croutons. About fifteen Marseille restaurants follow a charter that sets the authentic recipe: expect €60 to €90 per person, and book ahead, it's made to order.

Panisse and chichi frégi, the beach snacks

Panisse (fried chickpea flour cakes, born in the L'Estaque neighborhood) is nibbled as an aperitif or side dish. Chichi frégi (a long doughnut rolled in sugar and scented with orange blossom) is eaten on the go on the beaches of that same neighborhood, at the city's north-western tip.

Sugiton requires a reservation in summer

Since 2024, access to the Sugiton calanque requires a free online reservation on certain summer days: in 2026, every day from June 27 to August 30, plus a few weekends in June and September. Capped at 400 visitors a day.

Booking opens 3 days before your visit (9am) and closes the day before at 6pm. Sormiou, Morgiou and En-Vau remain accessible without a reservation.

Check the fire risk before heading out

In summer, access to the calanques can be completely closed depending on the day's fire risk level, reassessed every evening between 5pm and 6pm for the next day. A €750 fine is possible for entering a restricted area.

Book your ticket for the Frioul islands or Château d'If

Book your crossing online at lebateau-frioul-if.fr, especially in the height of summer when midday slots sell out fast. First shuttles from 6:30am from the Vieux-Port. Entry to Château d'If itself is only sold on site.

A transport pass beats single tickets

For a weekend, the 72h pass at €10.80 is the best value (bus, metro, tram and ferry-boat included); there's also a 24h pass at €5.20 and a 7-day pass at €15.50.

Don't bother trying to park downtown

Parking there is expensive and complicated. RTM's park-and-ride lots on the outskirts, connected to the metro, are free for transport pass holders, much simpler than circling downtown for 20 minutes.

Emergency numbers worth knowing

15 for SAMU (medical emergencies), 17 for police, 18 for firefighters, all free, 24/7. 112, the single European number, also works from a mobile with no SIM card and automatically routes you to the right service.

Book ahead for Sunday evening and Monday

Many restaurants are closed on those days, especially away from the Vieux-Port. If you're after a real bouillabaisse, book several days ahead.
