It's a question we get asked often right before people arrive: what should I actually pack? Marseille has a pleasant Mediterranean climate most of the year, but with a few local quirks, the Mistral wind chief among them, that often catch under-prepared visitors off guard. Here's what we'd recommend, season by season.
Marseille's climate, in short
Marseille enjoys a Mediterranean climate with about 300 sunny days a year, one of the best sunshine records in France. Summers are hot and dry, winters mild. The big local quirk is the Mistral: a strong, cold wind that blows in bursts lasting several days, capable of dropping the felt temperature very quickly, even in the middle of summer.
In summer (June to August)
Expect 25 to 32°C (77-90°F) during the day, with strong sun. Light, breathable clothes, a swimsuit (essential, swimming is part of the trip), a hat and sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen. Still keep a light jacket in your bag: an evening on a terrace with a Mistral gust can cool things down fast, especially near the water.
In spring and fall
This is our favorite season to visit: 12 to 20°C (54-68°F), still plenty of sun, fewer crowds. We recommend layering: a t-shirt, a light cardigan or jacket you can throw on quickly, and a compact windbreaker for Mistral days. Weather can shift fast within the same day, so it's best to be ready.

Winters stay mild compared to the rest of France, with 8 to 15°C (46-59°F) during the day, but the Mistral often blows stronger and more often than in summer. A warm, windproof jacket is essential, with a few layers underneath. Sunny days remain frequent, which often means you can still enjoy a terrace despite the season, with the right jacket.
What we pack no matter the season
Good walking shoes: Le Panier is visited on sloped cobblestones, and the Calanques require sturdy soles beyond the most easily accessible coves. A small day backpack, with a reusable water bottle, the tap water is excellent in Marseille, no need to buy bottles. A plug adapter if you're coming from outside the Euro zone (type C/E outlets). And, always useful here: a bag kept closed and in front of you in crowds at the Vieux-Port, to limit the one real risk of the trip, pickpocketing (see our article on safety).
