Marseille does not have the snow-and-mulled-wine Christmas of Alsace, and that is part of its charm. The market sits by the Vieux-Port, the weather is mild, and the city has its own Provençal traditions, starting with the little clay figurines called santons. One honest warning first: as of October 31, 2026, the santons fair has announced its dates (November 14, 2026 to January 3, 2027), but the Christmas market and the lights have not. Below is what is confirmed, what is not yet, and what to check before you book.
The Christmas market at the bottom of the Canebière
The Christmas market takes place at the bottom of the Canebière, the famous avenue that runs up from the Vieux-Port (the Old Port). Expect around forty wooden chalets selling gifts, decorations and food.
Dates for 2026? Not confirmed by the city as of October 31, 2026. The 2025-26 edition ran from November 22, 2025 to January 4, 2026. One events calendar mentions roughly November 21, 2026 to January 3, 2027 for this year, but treat that as a guess until the city says otherwise. Check marseille.fr or marseille-tourisme.com before you lock in flights.
A practical way to read the situation: the market has been an annual fixture, and last year's calendar gives you a reasonable idea of the window, roughly the last week of November through the first days of January. But a reasonable idea is not a booking confirmation. If your dates are fixed, mid-December sits inside both last year's dates and the rumored ones.
The santons fair on the Vieux-Port
The santons fair is set up on the Vieux-Port, on the Quai du Port. For its 224th edition, it is announced from Saturday, November 14, 2026 to Sunday, January 3, 2027, with 21 santon makers and free entry. Santons are hand-painted clay figurines that populate the Provençal nativity scene, and Marseille has been making them for generations.
The fair opens before the Christmas market, and the two are easy to combine in one outing. The announced hours are roughly 10 am to 7 pm, a little later on some weekend evenings: check them on the fair's official website before you go. If you want to bring one home, our separate article on Marseille santons covers how to choose.

The Christmas lights are switched on at the end of November. In 2025 the launch was on November 29. Expect the same rough timing this year, but as of October 31, 2026, the exact date has not been announced.
In 2025 there was also a show of drones, lasers and fire over the Vieux-Port on December 20. We have no confirmation that it will return in 2026, so please do not plan a trip around it. If it is announced, it will be on the city's website.
The lights are a reason to be out after dark. A walk in the early evening is enough to see the city dressed up.
As for the show, think of it as a bonus. If the city announces another one, check the date, the viewpoints and any restrictions it publishes. If it does not, the market, the fair and the lights are still a full evening.
Going out with the family
The market and the santons fair are easy to do with children: they are outdoors and central. The winter climate is mild by northern standards, but the mistral (the cold, dry northwest wind) can blow, so bring a windproof layer. On Sunday mornings there is also the food market on the Vieux-Port, which is a pleasant way to start the day.
If you are planning a longer winter stay, our article on Marseille in winter and at Christmas covers the season as a whole, and our guide to the Christmas holidays in Marseille tells you what is open on December 25.
A simple family plan is to do the market and the fair in one outing and keep a second activity for another day so no one is tired. A windy day can make the waterfront unpleasant, so keep an indoor plan in reserve.
Practical checklist
- Dates: the santons fair is announced from November 14, 2026 to January 3, 2027. For the market and the lights, confirm on marseille.fr or marseille-tourisme.com: they had not been announced as of October 31, 2026.
- Weather: mild, but pack for wind and a possible shower.
- January 1: many places are closed, so plan your meals ahead.
- Timing: the lights start at the end of November, so a late-November or December trip gets you the full effect.
Our last piece of advice is about timing the booking. Hotels and flights are easier to adjust than to cancel, so choose a flexible rate until the dates are published.
