Public Holidays and Sundays in Marseille: What Stays Open

This is one of the most common surprises for foreign visitors, especially those coming from countries where shops stay open around the clock: in France, and Marseille is no exception, Sundays and public holidays seriously change the picture for shopping, dining, and some sightseeing.

The classic surprise for foreign visitors

Sunday remains traditionally a day of rest in France: banks, most regular shops, and many restaurants close, or significantly cut their hours. This isn't unique to Marseille, but the effect is sometimes more noticeable outside the most touristy downtown streets.

What typically closes

Banks, most clothing and equipment stores, and a significant number of neighborhood restaurants close on Sundays or only open by late morning. Public holidays follow a similar logic, with the level of closure varying depending on how significant the date is on the calendar.

What stays open

Bakeries stay open almost every Sunday morning, often until 1pm. Shops located in tourist areas (Old Port, La Canebière) and some supermarkets on reduced hours also operate most Sundays. Restaurants in the Old Port and Cours Julien generally stay open, unlike more out-of-the-way neighborhood bistros.

Public holidays worth knowing about

France has 11 public holidays a year. May 1st, Labor Day, is the strictest: nearly all businesses close, including some restaurants and supermarkets, with no tourist exception. December 25th and January 1st follow a similar closure pattern, with a few exceptions in the most touristy parts of the Old Port.

The simplest habit: do your essential shopping on Saturday if your trip includes a Sunday, check a restaurant's or museum's hours online before heading over rather than relying on habits from your home country, and treat bakeries as a reliable fallback for breakfast or a Sunday morning stop.
