The local guide · zero tourist traps

Marseille, the way we actually live it.

A pocket guide for anyone who'd rather live a city than tick it off — in your 20s, your 30s, or happily past both. A Marseillaise and her American best friend send you where we really swim, eat and lose track of time — never where the coaches stop.

"Every address was a bullseye — not one tourist trap. Felt like texting a mate who actually lives there."

A good weekend here isn't about seeing everything. It's about swimming somewhere impossibly blue, eating something you can't pronounce, and staying out a little too late. We just tell you where.

— Léa & Jesse
Who it's for

Made for the ones who want the real thing.

Couples, friends, solo wanderers — in your twenties or your sixties. It was never about age: if you travel to feel a place rather than photograph it, this was written for you.

🧭

First-timers, not tourists

One weekend, and no desire to spend it queuing for the same photo as everyone else. You want the version locals would actually show you.

🌊

Returners after the real Marseille

You've done Notre-Dame and the Vieux-Port. Now you want the calanque we hike before work and the bar with no sign on the door.

💸

Value-savvy, at any age

Great doesn't have to mean expensive — or young. So much of Marseille is free or nearly: swims, viewpoints, markets, sunsets, natural-wine apéros. We just tell you exactly where.

How it works

Like borrowing two friends who happen to live here.

01

Vetted by locals

If we wouldn't send our own visiting friends there, it doesn't make the guide. Nobody buys their way in.

02

Built for 3 days

Everything's ordered so a Friday-to-Sunday flows on its own — swim, apéro, dinner, rooftop — no spreadsheet needed.

03

Warm, plain English

No jargon, no tourist-speak. Just the way we'd tell you over a coffee on the Vieux-Port.

On the house

Four spots, free. To prove we mean it.

A calanque, a hidden beach, a brunch and a wine bar — the real cards from the guide, no strings. The other 25 unlock with the full thing.

Why it isn't free

Free lists send you where everyone goes. This doesn't.

You can google "best things to do in Marseille" and get the same twelve tourist-menu spots as every coach tour. What you can't google: which calanque to hit before the wind turns, the exact table to book, the bar where the owner just hands you the right bottle, and the order that makes a weekend actually flow. That's what €6,99 buys — a local in your pocket, not a listicle.

Everyone's Marseille

  • The same 12 spots every tourist posts
  • Tourist-menu bouillabaisse at 3× the price
  • No idea when to go — you meet the crowds and the wind
  • A list, in no order, that you replan on the pavement
  • Hours of scrolling blogs that all copy each other

Marseille, quartier by quartier

Get your bearings in five minutes.

Marseille isn't one city, it's a dozen villages that never quite merged. Here's the lay of the land so the guide makes sense.

Le Panier

2e

The old town — Marseille's oldest quarter. Laundry lines, murals, staircases and the best gelato. Wander with no plan.

Vieux-Port

1er

The beating heart. Boats, the morning fish market, ferries to the islands and terraces for a pastis. Everything radiates from here.

Cours Julien & N.-D. du Mont

6e

The creative, bohemian hill — street art, natural-wine bars, record shops and the city's best nightlife.

La Corniche & Malmousque

7e

The seafront road south, dotted with tiny coves and swimming spots. Sunset central and the coffee-with-a-view crowd.

Les Goudes & Callelongue

8e

Where the road ends and the calanques begin. Fishing cabanons, rocks to dive off, and the feeling of the end of the world.

Le Camas & Lodi

5e / 6e

Real residential Marseille — neighbourhood bistros, wine bars and zero tourists. Where locals actually eat.

Who it's for

Not for everyone. Definitely for you.

We didn't write this for tour buses or bucket-list tickers. We wrote it for the traveller who wants Marseille the way we live it — salty, sun-drunk and a little off-script. Twenties or sixties, first trip or fifth: age was never the point — how you like to travel is. If any of this sounds like you, you're exactly who we made it for.

You'll love this guide if you…

  • …would rather find one perfect calanque than photograph ten monuments.
  • …rate a trip by the meals, the swims and the people — not the checklist.
  • …want a local's shortcut, not three hours lost in travel blogs.
  • …travel on a real budget and still want it to feel special.
  • …pick the natural-wine bar with no sign over the rooftop with a queue.
  • …believe the best trips are half-planned and fully lived.
Four kinds of us
🧭
The first-timer

Your first Marseille

One weekend, a swimsuit and zero patience for tourist-menu bouillabaisse. We hand you the version we'd give a friend flying in — the calanque before the heat, the table worth booking, the bar you'll brag about back home.

🌊
The returner

Beyond the postcard

You've seen the Vieux-Port and climbed to Notre-Dame. Now you want the Marseille behind it — Malmousque at golden hour, the cabanon that only takes cash, the wine counter the locals keep quiet about.

💸
The smart-budget crew

Cheap, but make it special

Curious, value-savvy, one eye on the bank app — at any age. Good news: the best of Marseille is free or nearly — the swims, the viewpoints, the markets, the sunsets. We tell you exactly where, so a broke weekend still feels like a flex.

🍽
The eat-drink-swim type

The perfect day, on repeat

Morning swim, long lunch, a nap, an apéro, and a dinner that turns into a night. This is basically a map of that exact day — done properly, three days in a row.

Honestly? Skip it if…

…you want a checklist of the ten most-photographed monuments, or the biggest tourist restaurants on the port. That's free to google — and we'd rather you kept your money. This guide is the opposite: small, local, and a little bit ours.

Why pay for a guide?

Why this is worth paying for.

Free lists send everyone to the same handful of tourist spots. This is the opposite — three locals, every address personally tested, ordered into a weekend that actually flows.

📍

Hyper-local

Written by three Marseillais who live it — Le Panier, the Corniche, Les Goudes. Not a travel desk in another city.

Tested & validated

Every single spot is somewhere we've actually been and vouch for. Nobody pays to be listed — ever.

💬

Honest & warm

We tell you when something's touristy, pricey or worth the queue — the way a friend would, not a brochure.

🗺

Curated & ordered

Mapped and sequenced into a real 3-day flow — swim, apéro, dinner, rooftop — so you never replan on the pavement.

Quality over quantity

We could have listed four hundred places. We didn't. This is every spot we'd genuinely send a friend to — the best ones we know, and not one more. A weekend has limits; choosing well beats choosing everything.

Our story

Two friends, one city, too many good addresses to keep quiet.

Léa and Jesse, the two friends behind the guide
The two behind it

Léa & Jesse

A Marseillaise and her best friend from across the Atlantic — one who never left, one who never really wanted to.

L
LéaBorn in Le Panier. Knows every staircase, every bakery and exactly when to hit the calanque.
J
JesseCame from California for a weekend. Rebooked his flight twice. Never really left.

It started on a balcony in Le Panier, the way most things here do — with an apéro and a complaint. Léa had watched one too many friends land in Marseille for a weekend and spend it queuing for the same three things, eating the same tourist-menu bouillabaisse, and leaving convinced they'd "done" the city.

Jesse was one of those friends — a Californian who came for two days, got dragged to a calanque before breakfast, and quietly rebooked his flight. He kept asking Léa the question every visitor asks: "But where do YOU actually go?"

So they started writing it down — first on napkins, then in a shared note that got embarrassingly long. A local who knows where everything is, and an outsider who remembers exactly what it's like to arrive knowing nothing. This guide is their argument, settled: the local's real addresses, explained the way you'd want them explained the very first time.

What we believe

Local first

Every spot is somewhere we actually go — not somewhere that paid to be here. Nobody can buy their way in.

Honest & warm

We tell you when something's touristy, expensive, or worth the queue. Like a friend would, not a brochure.

Small on purpose

Fifty-odd spots, not four hundred. A weekend has limits, and choosing well beats choosing everything.
